Last month, Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture student Kaveen Jayawardane travelled to Saint Lucia, joining our partner institution Algonquin College to support our local partners in the Skills to Access the Green Economy project (SAGE 06) with social marketing and entrepreneurship training.
While in Saint Lucia, Kaveen worked with the National Skills Development Centre on their Community Open House, assisting them to demonstrate the new agro-processing program that has been developed with the support of Dal AC and Algonquin College. This included demonstrations in fruit dehydration (mango) and the preparation and bottling of hot sauces, both popular commodities for the local market that help to reduce post harvest waste and provide sources of income along the agricultural value chain.
A second Community Open House was held at SAGE 06 partner institution Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC), where prospective students and community members learned about the growth stages of tomato plants and received a tutorial on digital tools to manage plant care, both of which are important components within the new climate-smart crop production program developed within SAGE 06. Â
Kaveen also had an opportunity to join SALCC students on a field trip to visit a cacao farm and learn more about the harvest and processing of this important commodity.
Funded by Global Affairs Canada, this Colleges and Institutes Canada project demonstrates how international education collaborations help Dal AC faculty, staff and students to strengthen our cultural, social and economic connections with colleagues around the world.
