Dalhousie’s Bachelor of Management program starts by giving students a foundation in business and management, helping them develop the skills they need to organize and lead teams and to respond to internal and external pressures.   

As a Public Sector Management major, you will build on this foundation by exploring how to create a good society and how to balance justice with order.

Minimum admission requirements

To be considered for admission to this program, you must meet minimum academic criteria:

  1. Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
  2. Achievement of the minimum average for your program of choice.
  3. Completion of Grade 12 English (or equivalent course).

Admission to many Dalhousie programs is competitive. This means that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Program-specific admission requirements

  • Minimum overall average: 75%    

  • Academic English 12    

  • Academic Math 12    

  • Three additional academic subjects

As part of the Public Sector Management major, you will have the opportunity to work with professionals in your chosen field and combine relevant job experience with classroom studies.

There is an optional internship available for Bachelor of Management students during their third year of study. Ìý

What you will learn

Learn about management issues related to planning, organizing, leading, and controlling within a variety of environments within the private, not-for-profit, and public sectors. Ìý

You will come to understand the fundamental difference between the public and private interest and how such differences are navigated through contemporary governance systems involving public, private, and civic actors.

A major in Public Sector Management will equip you with the management skills required by public service organizations and an understanding of the organization, processes and policies of government, its public agencies and the policy groups that work in the public sector.

Careers

The public sector is made up of governments and their agencies, from the international to the local levels. It includes other publicly funded bodies, such as hospitals, schools, government corporations (e.g. CBC, Canada Post, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, etc.) and many not-for-profit organizations. Graduates from this major hold various positions in municipal, provincial, and federal government, as well as the not-for-profit and private sectors.

You can continue your studies with a master's degree in areas like information management; public administration; or resource and environmental management.
