Are you interested in physical activity, health, and ergonomics? We’ve got you covered. Kinesiology is a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human movement and our program offers you a wide variety of classes taught by professors known for their research. Tailor your degree to your interests with the option to focus on a specific study stream — fitness and lifestyle, ergonomics, or coaching science — or pursue an all-around combination of classes.

Minimum admission requirements

To be considered for admission to this program, you must meet minimum academic criteria:

  1. Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
  2. Achievement of the minimum average for your program of choice.
  3. Completion of Grade 12 English (or equivalent course).

Admission to many Dalhousie programs is competitive. This means that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Program-specific admission requirements

  • Minimum overall average of 75%Ìý

  • English - (min 70%)

  • Math (min. 70%)

  • Three other academic subjects

  • It is highly recommended that applicants also have one or more of Biology, Chemistry or Physics as preparation for the program.

Program options

Along with your course learning, you’ll also gain experience in research methodology and have the opportunity to complete an independent research project. If you decide to pursue the honours option, you will have a chance to immerse yourself in research and complete a thesis under the mentorship of a Kinesiology professor.

The 25-hour practicum in your final year will allow you to enhance your studies and put learning into practice in a professional setting under the supervision of a qualified mentor. Although the minimum practicum is 25 hours, many students put in more hours on site because it’s a rewarding experience that helps to build their job skills.

What you will learn

The courses you take will depend on your personal interests. You’ll gain a broad background in various subdisciplines of kinesiology, including anatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, biomechanics, movement control, and psychology of performance. You’ll also be exposed to the foundational sciences such as biology, physics, psychology, and mathematics.

In your upper years, you can choose whether you’d like to do a general degree in kinesiology or apply to one of the three focused streams: ergonomics, fitness and lifestyle, or coaching science. If you’re accepted into one of the streams, you'll need to take certain courses to complete your degree.
