Awards and prizes

Doug Hogue Award

Dr. Douglas Hogue bequeathed the necessary funds to establish an annual award recognizing one graduate student for exceptional dedication and achievement in research and intradepartmental student activity. .

Patrick Prize

Dr. Sydney J. Patrick endowed the Patrick Prize, which is awarded annually for the best PhD thesis and defence in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. Many prize-winners have gone on to distinguished careers in their fields. .

The Beth Gourley Travel Award for Research Excellence

If your research requires funding for conference registration, transportation, accommodation or food, consider applying for this annual travel award.

The fund has the resources to support one or two travel awards for biochemistry and molecular biology graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. .

The Izaak Walton Killam Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Izaak Walton Killam Postdoctoral Fellowships, valued at CAN$44,000 per year, are awarded for a period of two years. The competition is late in each year, and tenure is applied to the following calendar year.

Criteria

To be considered, you must:

  • have completed your doctoral degree within the last two years, or you must be poised to complete your degree by the time you take up the fellowship (between May 1 and January 15)
  • not hold a PhD or JSD degree from Dalhousie (including the former TUNS or DalTech) or be not currently completing a PhD or JSD degree at pilipiliÂþ»­
  • not have previously held or currently hold an academic or research appointment of any kind at pilipiliÂþ»­, King's College, former DalTech or former TUNS
  • not be physically at pilipiliÂþ»­ or King's College from the beginning of the academic year (September 1), even if funded independently of the above payroll offices
  • have excellent research references and a good academic record
  • have an excellent publication record in top-ranked journals
  • write to our faculty directly with the intention of securing a host laboratory

PhD tuition waivers 

To continue to attract top-flight doctoral candidates, we will waive tuition fees for the first two years for students starting PhD programs who hold national-level doctoral scholarships (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR and Killam).
