Knee mechanics of healthy and osteoarthritic joints

Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) can be the result of both mechanical and biological events that interfere with normal joint function. I will discuss my research to (1) quantify the biomechanical factors that differentiated structural OA progression, (2) determine if knee biomechanics changed overtime in response to structural changes, (3) identify sex and puberty specific differences that may mechanically predispose females to OA, and (4) determine the response of healthy knee joints to a high dose of sport to assess the contribution of knee mechanics to tissue damage.
Time and Location: Thursday December 5, 2019, 11:45am, Dentistry Room 3157.  Coffee and snacks will be served.

Dec 11th

Dr. Kevin Ford

Injury risk & performance enhancement: The role of biomechanics

Abstract: This talk will highlight previous and current work related to reducing the risk of injury in athletes. Specifically, debilitating injuries like anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures will be highlighted. The future of implementing evidence based lab and field screening with targeted neuromuscular interventions will be discussed.
Biography: Kevin R. Ford, PhD, FACSM is the Director of the Human Biomechanics and Physiology Laboratory and Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, Congdon School of Health Sciences at High Point University. Dr. Ford is an accomplished researcher in sports medicine and biomechanics with over 150 peer-reviewed articles. He is a world-renowned expert in biomechanics and has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on multiple NIH funded grants in addition to consistent industry support. His research involves innovative studies, which answer the question of why devastating injuries occur and to determine how they can be prevented. He analyzes the biomechanics of complex movement patterns and sport skills that relate to prevention of injury or enhanced performance in a variety of populations from healthy athletes to patients suffering from traumatic injuries.
Time and Location: Wednesday November 11th, 11:00am, Dentistry Room 3157.  Coffee and snacks will be served.
