Diversity Task Force

The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders (SCSD) values diversity and an inclusive academic environment for its student body, faculty and staff.  The Diversity Task Force was established in the fall of 2011 to address matters affecting the diversity of the program.

The specific functions of the Task Force are:

  1. To provide up-to-date information relating to equity, inclusion, and diversity on the School website and Facebook page.
  2. To expand the diversity of the professions (Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology) through promotion, recruitment, and admissions activities.
  3. To promote highly trained professionals to work effectively and appropriately with individuals, families and professionals regardless of cultural and linguistic background or ability.

Past and Current Initiatives

The Diversity Task Force is made up of students and faculty. We meet monthly and focus our efforts on specific initiatives.

Website and Social Media

The Diversity Task Force has developed a variety of means prospective and current students and faculty to access resources regarding diversity. The SCSD website was revised to ensure issues of diversity were addressed including providing targeted resources such as volunteer opportunities, funding opportunities, and a list of current events.

A Facebook group was created to share information among current students. An on-line calendar is regularly populated with local events that address issues of diversity.

Equity Admissions and Financial Assistance

  • Ongoing scrutiny and revision of equity admissions policy so as to make admissions more inclusive.
  • Identify and expand funding opportunities for students from equity-seeking groups.

On-going scrutiny of the curriculum to facilitate embedding of cultural humility, equity and social justice principles and ensure students are prepared to work effectively in a diverse world.

Develop clinical education placement opportunities that offer students with mentored experiences with diverse populations.
