Brandon and Ollie in action at the Airway Olympics

Last month, two third year respiratory therapy students, Brandon D'Souza and Ollie Poole stood out among the 63 other student competitors and earned top prizes at the annual Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) Conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Brandon and Ollie competed in the Airway Olympics, and airway management skills competition.Ā  They were one of over 40 student and therapist teams who faced a number of challenges while attempting to intubate neonatal and adult manikins, including intubating while lying on the floor, blindfolded and without a laryngoscope.Ā  After six rounds of elimination, they lost in a close final to a team of anaesthesia supervisors from Ontario.Ā  For finishing as the top student team, they won an all expense paid trip to next year's CSRT Conference in Montreal.

Ollie poses with his prize winning poster

Ollie's poster "Initial Ventilation Settings After Emergent Endotracheal Intubation: A Retrospective Analysis" won the Best Student Poster Award.Ā  Ollie did his research for the poster with Dr. Dietrich Henzler (Department of Anaesthesia) and his group who are investigating initial mechanical ventilation setting after emergency intubation and their relationship with post intubation hemodynamic instability.

Congratulations Brandon and Ollie!
