Scholarships, Prizes, and Bursaries (Cinema & Media Studies)

In addition to general university scholarships and bursaries, our students in Cinema and Media Studies (CMS) degree programs are eligible for specific scholarships and awards throughout the academic year. Recipients of scholarships and awards are chosen by faculty unless otherwise stated.

Cinema and Media Studies Fountain Scholarships

There are two Cinema and Media Studies Fountain Scholarships: a one-year entrance scholarship of $6000, and an in-course renewable scholarship of $6000/year. These are awarded to excellent Cinema and Media Studies Major, Double Major, or Combined Honours students.

Fountain Entrance Scholarship
The one-year, $6000-dollar Fountain Entrance Scholarship in Cinema and Media Studies is awarded to an incoming student direct from high school who demonstrates academic excellence.ÌýYou'll need a high school grade minimum 87% admission average [an admission average is calculated based upon the five required courses for the program to which the student has applied] OR a minimum 29 predicted/anticipated IB Diploma points.ÌýÌýRecipients, like all other CMS students, are eligible to apply for the Fountain In-Course Scholarship in Cinema and Media Studies as early as the winter of their first year.

To be eligible for scholarship consideration, your academic application to the university MUST be complete by March 1, including provision of high school transcripts and all other requirements. See theÌýRegistrar's web siteÌýfor more information on admission requirements.

Eligibility and Criteria:ÌýStudent must apply for a Major, Double Major, or Combined Honours in Cinema and Media Studies. There are no additional application requirements for this program, but to be eligible for the scholarship, you need to have declared CMS as part of your degree. Once notified, recipients of the award are strongly urged to consult the Associate Director of Cinema and Media Studies for recommendations of courses to take in their first year.

Application Procedure and Deadline:ÌýÌýStudents must apply for the scholarshipÌýby March 1. Applications will include your answers to and an essay you wrote for a high school class or another forum (see questionnaire for details). If you have questions about whether a given topic is appropriate, please contact theÌýAssociate Director of Cinema and Media Studies.

Fountain In-Course Scholarship
The $6000-per-year Fountain In-Course Scholarship in Cinema and Media Studies can be held for the number of years that remain in the student’s degree, based on a four-year course of study. For example, if you're awarded the scholarship at the end of your second year, you will receive two years of funding (i.e, in your third and fourth years) as long as other criteria are met.

Eligibility and Criteria: The Cinema & Media Studies faculty nominates one selected student based on a student's overall GPA of at least 3.5. To retain the scholarship in a subsequent year, the recipient must complete at least 24 credit hours between September and April each year; must maintain a GPA average of 3.5 after year two and 3.7 after year three; and must remain a Major/Honours student in CMS.

Other In-Course Scholarships
As funds are available, students in the Fountain School, including those in the Cinema and Media Studies program, are granted in-course scholarships based on GPA. No application is necessary.

The Cinema and Media Studies Prize: awarded to the graduating Cinema and Media Studies student with the highest GPA in all film classes. No application is necessary.

Summer Program Awards

The offer students the opportunity to gain financial assistance toward summer programs that will contribute toward their studies in Theatre, Music or Cinema and Media Studies. The awards can be used toward relevant international courses run by Dalhousie or special summer programs offered by other universities or organizations in Canada and beyond.
