Dr. Vasantha Rupasinghe, Professor and Killam Chair in Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals of Department of Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences, has edited a book which focuses on recent advances and future perspectives on health-promotion properties of bioactive flavonoids present in plant-based diet.
Flavonoids are ubiquitously present in teas, wines, fruits, vegetables, and their products.
This book is now available as an e-book and printed version (346 pages). The publication is a result of the Special Issue “Flavonoids and Their Disease Prevention and Treatment Potential” that was edited by Dr. Rupasinghe and published in Molecules. Molecules is an internationally recognized peer-reviewed journal of chemistry published by Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, Switzerland.
According the preface of the book written by Dr. Rupasinghe, during the last decade, the interest in dietary flavonoids to prevent human diseases and use them as pharmaceutical leads has been exponentially extended.
Flavonoids, a sub-class of plant polyphenols, exhibit numerous physiological benefits in a wide range of investigations, from cell-based assays to randomized, controlled human clinical trials. Beyond their role as plant-food dietary antioxidants, new insights are presented in this book for the potential use of flavonoids and their derivatives as effective therapeutics to manage many chronic and metabolic disorders, including certain cancers.
