Don of Residence - Dalhousie Agricultural Campus
The Don is a live-in position and is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and positive living environment within the House – one which supports the development of (primarily) undergraduate student residents.Ìý This would be consistent with the University’s mission statement, and the Dons will promote both personal and academic development of students. The Don’s focus is on facilitating the development of RA teams, House Council, team leaders and the students in the House, both individually through personal interaction, referrals and mentoring and collectively through programming. The Don is the leader on in-House issues (conduct, discipline, initial crisis intervention, roommate concerns)
Major Duties
Don’s responsibilities include:
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Supporting students in the House, in both their academic and co–curricular development, including their psychological and social development.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Develop and implement programs and campaigns as directed by the RLM for the residence complex.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Assisting with policy development and interpret, implement and administer polices on an operational basis.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Acting as mediator and resource in non-emergency situations to resolve conflicts between students, and providing guidance and referral for various medical, emotional or academic issues.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Encouraging and developing student leadership within the House.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Overseeing the scheduling and day to day work of the RAs.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Participating in the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of the RA Team.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Participating and assisting in the planning, development and implementation of RA training and ongoing professional development sessions throughout the year.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Assisting and supporting residence office staff with administrative tasks.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Attending and participating in weekly meetings called by the RLM.

Qualifications
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý A university degree or related field is an asset.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Residence experience preferred
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Demonstrated ability and interest in fostering student development as per the responsibilities.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Recent work experience in a position requiring staff supervision and administrative responsibilities is an asset.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Proven ability to develop and facilitate sessions/workshops.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Demonstrated mediation ability.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Experience in educational and social programming an asset
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Counseling experience an asset.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Current St. Johns Ambulance Emergency First Aid – CPR certificate.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Certified Assist program.
•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check.
