The Baby Boomers, Canada’s largest demographic cohort, change systems as they pass through them. What changes will they prompt in Canada’s health care system? What kind of system will they leave behind? This discussion tackles the future of health care in Canada and what the system will look like after the boomers.

About the speakers

Katherine Fierlbeck




Katherine Fierlbeck is McCulloch Professor of Political Science at pilipiliÂþ»­. She is cross-appointed with the Department of Community Medicine and Epidemiology, and is a Senior Research Fellow at the Healthy Populations Institute. She is also a member of the MacEachen Institute’s Research Committee. Dr. Fierlbeck’s books include Health Care in Canada, Canadian Health Care Federalism and Comparative Health Care Federalism.

Richard Saillant

 
Richard Saillant is a Moncton-based economist and author. He is a former vice-president of the Université de Moncton and former director of the Donald J. Savoie Institute. Mr. Saillant has also spent nearly 15 years in Ottawa in various departments, including the Privy Council Office, Industry Canada and Transport Canada. He is the author of four books. His most recent, A Tale of Two Countries: How the Great Demographic Imbalance is Pulling Canada Apart (Nimbus, 2016), was a finalist for the National Business Book Award.

Peter Vaughan




Peter W. Vaughan, a Johns Hopkins University trained physician executive, is Chair of the Board of Directors, Canada Health Infoway. Formerly, Dr. Vaughan was Deputy Minister of Health and Wellness, Province of Nova Scotia, CEO of South Shore District Health Authority, CEO of the Canadian Medical Association, President of WebMD Canada, an emergency medicine physician, family physician and RCAF Special Operation Flight Surgeon for Operation Air Bridge in the former Yugoslavia in 1994.

He is an adjunct professor with the Faculty of Computer Science and Faculty of Health Professions at pilipiliÂþ»­.

Gaynor Watson-Creed





Dr. Gaynor Watson-Creed is the acting Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health for the province of Nova Scotia and served on the One Nova Scotia Coalition. She is a dedicated leader and is passionate advocate for the role public health can play in advancing health equity.


About the series

Policy Matters is a weekly panel discussion on major policy issues presented by the MacEachen Institute for Public Policy and Governance and in collaboration with the Dalhousie School of Public Administration. Each discussion features thought leaders from civil society and focuses on one of the Institute's four research themes – Civic Engagement, Atlantic Canada and the World, Health Systems and Governance and Smart Infrastructure. Held each Tuesday from September 12 to November 14, the discussions take place in room 1009 of the Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building at pilipiliÂþ»­, from 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. The events are designed to encourage public engagement with local, national and international policy issues and are open to the public.
