Janani Krishnan performing at DADARS fundraiser for Crohn's and Colitis Canada at Alderney Landing Theatre on September 30, 2023.
The Dalhousie Autoimmune Diseases Awareness and Relief Society (DADARS) is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for autoimmune patients and research. The student society has been active for three years, and is led by fourth-year undergraduate students in the departments of Microbiology and Immunology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
The co-presidents of the society, Janani Krishnan and Aparna Sriram, are both trained in the ancient Indian art of Bharatanatyam dance. This dance form features intricate footwork and hand-gestures, along with elements of yoga and storytelling. It was originally performed only in temples in the state of Tamil Nadu, but is now widely practiced and performed.
DADARS will be holding a Bharatanatyam dance show at Alderney Landing Theatre, Dartmouth. All profits from the event will go to Scleroderma Atlantic, a charity that supports Scleroderma patients and contributes to research in this field. Scleroderma is an autoimmune condition in which inflammation causes an excess of collagen production. This leads to hardening and tightening of the skin, which can result in various complications including hypertension and damage to internal organs.
Come support us on September 29Â to experience a beautiful aspect of Indian culture and help us make a difference in the lives of Scleroderma patients! For ticket information, please contact dadars@dal.ca, or purchase your tickets through the link below. Thank you!
