Assistant Professor, 2-Year Limited Term - Ethics and Computer Science or Philosophy of Mind
The Department of Philosophy at pilipiliÂþ» invites applications from junior academics for a 2-year limited term appointment at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2022. Area of specialization: Ethics and Computer Science or Philosophy of Mind. Area of competence: Logic. Competence in History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, or Philosophy of Art is an asset. (In all of these areas, global philosophical, feminist or other diverse and inclusive perspectives are welcome.) This position is subject to budgetary approval.
The pilipiliÂþ»ful applicant will teach courses at introductory, intermediate and advanced undergraduate/ graduate levels, with the possibility of some limited graduate student supervision and limited committee work. Excellence in teaching (as attested by student or departmental evaluations of past teaching, sample syllabi, and the like) and research (as attested by publications, conference presentations, and a writing sample) is required. Applicants must hold (or be about to receive) a Ph.D. in Philosophy. The course load will be 3 and 3 with the possibility of course-release for management of large, first-year classes. Courses to be taught will include two sections of Social, Professional and Ethical Issues in Computer Science (as part of the Embedded Ethics initiative for Computer Science majors) a senior/graduate seminar in Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Science or Philosophy of Psychology, a second-year class in Symbolic Logic, and possibly a third-year class in Philosophy of Language and second-year classes on Minds and Machines, the Rationalists, or Philosophy of Art. Preference will be given to candidates who display the ability to convey the direct relevance and importance of Ethics and other areas of Philosophy for hands-on work in Computer Science. The ability to bring diverse philosophical perspectives and inclusive practices into courses, appropriate to addressing a diverse student body, is also valued. Salary will depend upon qualifications and experience, in accordance with the Dalhousie Faculty Association collective agreement.
