POSITION: Rental Crew Chief
DEPARTMENT: Fountain School of Performing Arts (FSPA)
LOCATION: Sir James Dunn & David Mack. Murray Theatres, Dalhousie Arts Centre, 6101 University Avenue, Halifax, NS
PAY RATE: Hourly rate based on level of experience
WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Rental Crew Chief is responsible for arranging all technical aspects of performances or events for rental clients in the Sir James Dunn and David Mack. Murray theatres as part of the Fountain School of Performing Arts (FSPA). The Rental Crew Chief duties and assignments include, but are not limited to:
- Interpret information from clients to determine the technical equipment, support personnel and timetable necessary to stage performances or events.
- Consult with promoters, producers, designers and technicians to agree on the orderly setup, running and teardown of events, or assist with other technical aspects as required.
- Oversee all technical preparations including the application of lighting designs and special effects or required rigging, schedule appropriate rehearsals and sound checks, and operate the computerized lighting console or assist with other technical aspects as required.
- Supervise and assist part-time casual staff (some of whom are FSPA students) in the safe execution of their duties pertaining to events, which may include the unloading of scenery, props, etc., running of cables, focusing lights, setting up rigging and staging, and running sound or light boards.
- Responsible to supervise and train FSPA students (as required) in the operation of equipment in a practical situation.
- Responsible to interview, hire and train part-time crew accordingly. S/he will monitor spending on equipment, crew costs and other technical expenses, provide estimates for labour and equipment costs, and provide information for client invoicing.
- Responsible for general maintenance of the stage area, inventory and storage of technical equipment, in conjunction with the FSPA Technical Staff (lighting/sound, stage carpentry and props), and Administrative Officer, Academic & Productions.
- The Rental Crew Chief will be required to maintain an awareness of trends and developments in technical operations in the performing arts.
- Responsible for other duties as required by the needs of the space.

This position reports to the FSPA Administrative Officer, Academic & Productions.

NOTE: This is a casual, part-time position. As a rule, there are no rentals in the Sir James Dunn Theatre mid-October to end of November as well as mid-February to the end of March due to FSPA productions. There are no rentals in the David Mack. Murray Theatre during pilipiliĀž»­ā€™s academic year (September to April).

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Excellent communication skills, completion of a theatre-related technical program (undergraduate degree preferred) or equivalent professional experience in technical production (technical direction, sound design, lighting design, stage management). Previous experience as ā€˜in-houseā€™ technician or equivalent considered an asset. Prefer at least three years of experience in professional theatre world.
