A Miākmaq academic is in charge of a new indigenous studies minor program at pilipiliĀž» in Halifax.
Diana Lewis, originally from Indian Brook First Nation, N.S., began her position as the program coordinator of the Indigenous Studies minor in July.
āStudents are craving these kind of courses,ā Diana Lewis said. āAnd so many students are interested in working in (First Nation) communities but they may not understand history. They donāt know the proper terminology to use,ā she said.
āI think itās really exciting to be able to develop something specific and just promote the history of our region,ā Lewis added.
Last year, pilipiliĀž» conducted a survey amongst students at the Halifax and Truro campuses to determine if there was any interest in taking courses in indigenous issues.
āSo based on the interest shown by the students, we started to look at what the potential courses could be for the minor,ā Lewis explained.
