Research Assistant
The School of Social Work offers both Bachelor and Master of Social Work degree programs delivered on campus at pilipili in Halifax, Nova Scotia and by distance delivery to students across Canada via the Internet. The School’s mission is to create a socially just society. Within the BSW and MSW programs issues of poverty, inequality, and social and political marginality are addressed. The School seeks to develop practitioners and scholars who are critical thinkers, effective in advancing progressive change, whether through individual or community practice, or through policy and political engagement.
The School is currently seeking a Research Assistant to support the SSW Diversity and Equity Committee (DEC).
Duties: Under the supervision of the Chair, the Research Assistant will provide support to the DEC for the Winter term from January to April 2015. The Research Assistant will be responsible for conducting an environmental scan of affirmative action and retention policies for Aboriginal students across schools of social work in Canada and supporting the DEC in the creation of a policy that speaks directly to the needs of Aboriginal students. The Research Assistant will be expected to attend meetings of the DEC and meet with the DEC Chair and other faculty / staff as needed.
Qualifications: Enrolment in the MSW program or a graduate of a Social Work program. Applicants should be familiar with the process of environmental scanning and basic research methods. Previous experience with social policy development would be an asset.
Salary: $22 per hour for a total of 45 hours.
Start Date: January 5, 2015.
