Munro offered the university a financial lifeline about a century and a half ago, an act of such generosity that students at the time lobbied the university's Board of Governors for a day off classes to celebrate the man.
They got their wish in 1881, and the university has been marking Munro Day ever since with a holiday from work and classes. Munro Day was originally held in January, then shifted to different times of year. It is now held on the first Friday in February.
