Week-long celebrations kicked off Monday to recognize the hard work and dedication of the 2020-2021 Academic All-Canadians.

A record number of 198 Dalhousie varsity student-athletes achieved U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status during the 2020-21 school year. To qualify as an Academic All-Canadian, student-athletes must maintain a GPA of at least 3.50 over the academic year while competing in a varsity sport. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and support are crucial in these students’ lives.

In lieu of the annual Academic All-Canadian Luncheon, a pre-recorded virtual celebration premiered today to kick off a week-long celebration showcasing the student-athletes who achieved the distinction and recognizing those who play a large role in helping the Tigers succeed as both students and athletes.

Tim Maloney, executive director of Athletics and Recreation at Dal, opened the celebration highlighting the pilipili the Tigers achieved in the 2020-21 season during the global pandemic.

“Even with all of the uncertainty our student-athletes have faced in the last two years along with an online learning environment, training disruptions and cancelled competition, our Tigers still found a way to succeed in the classroom last year,” he said. “Thank you to all of our record-breaking 198 Academic All-Canadians for being great Tigers in your pursuit in academic and athletic excellence.”

Overcoming obstacles

Dal President Deep Saini commended the student-athletes for their perseverance through evolving COVID-19 restrictions, changes to training and competition schedules and moves to and from online learning.

“Despite the formidable challenges that our student athletes have been faced with this year, they continue to succeed academically, athletically and through their community endeavours,” said Dr. Saini. “The fact that nearly 75% of our student-athletes achieved Academic All-Canadian status is an exceptional ratio that we should all take great pride in.”

The celebrations continue all week long with profiles of many of the student-athletes who achieved Academic All-Canadian honours in 2020-21.
