Women’s Hockey
It was a tough week for the women’s hockey team who lost two contests by just one goal and extended their losing steak to four games. On Wednesday night the Saint Mary’s Huskies beat the Tigers 2-1 in OT while it was the UPEI Panthers winning 1-0 over the Tigers on Saturday night.
Dalhousie put up a strong effort against the Saint Mary’s Huskies who sit atop the AUS standings. Nicole Blanche scored shorthanded halfway through the first period giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead that would hold till late in the third period.
Lisa MacLean got the equalizer for the Tigers with just over four minutes remaining. Sarah Robichaud and Becca Chilvers were credited with the helpers.
Overtime was not favourable for the Tigers. After heading to the powerplay early on in the extra frame a turnover resulted in a Huskies breakaway and shorthanded goal by Caitlyn Schell.
Mati Barrett made 24 saves on 26 shots.
Kiana Strand had the lone goal of the game on Saturday night giving the Panthers a 1-0 victory. Marie-Soleil Deschenes stopped all 25 shots she faced in her shutout performance.
After dropping four straight games the Tigers hold a record of 6-9-1 and sit in sixth place in the AUS. Next weekend the Tigers are off to Mount Allison and StFX.
Women’s Basketball
Over the weekend, the women’s basketball team travelled to UNB for a two game set. The ladies were unable to come home with a win against the third place UNB Varsity Reds.
On Friday night the Varsity Reds cruised to a 67-52 win. UNB established a 13-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Tigers never held the lead.
The Tigers offence struggled as Tessa Stammberger was held to just nine points, something we haven’t seen all season long. On the Varsity Reds side, Kiley DeLong and Rachel Cleary led the offense with 12 points each.
It was a similar story line on Saturday night as the Varsity Reds outscored the Tigers 20-6 in the first quarter, en route to a 64-50 victory over the Tigers.
Stammberger was back to her usual ways putting up 19 points while Ainsley MacIntyre had 14 points of her own.
The Tigers played well for the remainder of the game keeping pace with the Varsity Reds put were unable to erase the early 14-point deficit.
Dalhousie will look to get back in the win column on Friday night when they host the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
Men’s Basketball
The Dalhousie Tigers and the UNB Varsity Reds split the two-game set at the Currie Centre over the weekend.
Dalhousie came away with the win on Friday night after falling behind 15 points in the first quarter. The Tigers came storming back in the second quarter cutting the deficit to two by the end of the half.
Sven Stammberger led the comeback putting up 15 points in the first half while going 3-3 from downtown.
After trailing for virtually the entire game the Tigers grabbed the lead with just two minutes remaining in the game. Ritchie Kanza Mata grabbed his own rebound on a missed free throw to seal the game for the Tigers in the final seconds.
Kanza Mata continued his strong play in the second half of the season with 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists in this one. Javon Masters put up 34 points for the Varsity Reds.
On Saturday night the roles were reversed, as it was the Tigers jumping out to a 10-point first quarter lead and the Varsity Reds completing the comeback.
Dalhousie held a 37-30 lead at the half but a strong fourth quarter from the Varsity reds propelled them to an 86-71 victory.
Stammberger recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Masters was at it again with 22 points including 15 points in the fourth quarter.
Dalhousie now sits in a tie for second in the AUS with the Varsity Reds and is just two points out of first place. The boys will be back in action on Friday when they host crosstown rivals, the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
Women’s Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team was perfect this weekend, not dropping a set in either of their games at home versus the Huskies and the Varsity Reds.
On Friday night the Tigers beat the Huskies 25-20, 25-19, 25-16. The Huskies put up a bit of a fight early on in the first set but the Tigers proved to be too much.
Head Coach Rick Scott was able to get the whole bench into this one as everyone saw the floor. Anna Dunn-Suen led the way with seven kills while Courtney Baker had five blocks.
The Tigers were dominate on Saturday night beating the Varsity Reds 25-21, 25-16, 25-11.
Dunn-Suen once again led the Tigers with nine attacks while Mieke DuMont had nine of her own. Courtney Baker was the best defensive player on the Tigers side with 13 digs.
Dalhousie will host Moncton on Sunday, January 24 at 2pm in the Dalplex.
Men’s Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team had a two game set against the UNB Varsity Reds and came away with two wins. On Friday night the Tigers won by a score of 19-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17.
Dalhousie was outplayed and out chanced in the first set losing 25-19. Kristen O’Brien had a huge kill to start the second set which established a tone for the remainder of the night.
With the support of 220 Tigers fans the men’s volleyball team went on to grab the following three sets. O’Brien led the attack with 11 kills while Adam Sandeson had 12 digs.
On Saturday, Dalhousie struggled to put away the Varsity Reds. After grabbing the opening two sets, the Varsity Reds clawed their way back forcing a fifth and final set. The Tigers came out on top 3-2 (25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 15-10).
UNB was in trouble in the third set finding themselves trailing halfway through but Pascal McCarthy and Cody Timmons came up with some big kills to take the lead. The momentum shift carried into the fourth set as the Varsity Reds managed to force a final set.
It was all Tigers in the fifth set who established an early lead and held on to take their second win in as many nights.
Dalhousie sits in first place in the AUS with a 7-3 record. Next weekend the Tigers will be competing in the third AUS-RSEQ Interlock Event at UNB.
Men’s Hockey
It was a good weekend for the men’s hockey team who came away with their first win since November 20. The Tigers beat the UPEI Panthers 4-1 on Saturday night but fell to the UNB Varsity Reds the night before 2-0.
The Varsity Reds scored late in the third period to take a 1-0 lead. Dylan Willick added an empty net goal for a 2-0 final. It was a good performance for the Tigers who managed to hang in with one of the best teams in the league.
Corbin Boes was fantastic stopping 40 shots.
On Saturday, it was the Tigers best two players getting the job done as Phil Gadoury posted a hat trick and Boes made 45 saves.
Gadoury scored on the powerplay half way through the second period, giving the Tigers their first lead of the weekend. Mike Evelyn scored just 21 seconds into the third period after a nice feed from Tanner Williams.
Andrew Wigginton made the play of the night on a beautiful pass to Gadoury who scored his second of the game on a one timer putting the Tigers up 3-0 with 14 minutes remaining.
Gadoury would complete his third hat trick of the year scoring on an empty net in the final minutes.
Dalhousie 5-11-3 sit five points back of a playoff spot and will have to string some wins together if they want a legitimate shot at making the post season. The Acadia Axemen will travel to the Halifax Forum on Tuesday, January 19 to face off with the Tigers.
Swimming
Both swim teams came away with wins at the 2016 Dave Mills Invitational in Charlottetown as the Tigers won 29 of 36 wins. Gavin Dyke set a new AUS record in the 200-metre freestyle (as part of the 400m IM relay)breaking a 24-year-old record with a time of 1:49.27.
Seven Tigers clocked CIS qualifying times over the course of the weekend including: Dyke, Claire Yurkovich, Tony Liew, Morrgan Payne, Katie Webster Kaetlin Fenton and Phoebe Lenderyou.
Lenderyou was dominant winning all four of her events and posting CIS qualifying times in three of them.

Track and Field
The track and field team was split at two meets over the weekend with the throwers competing at Jump Start Athletics open in Moncton and the runners at the Athletics Nova Scotia Indoor Open at Canada Games Centre. The following athletes captured first place in their respective events:
