Women’s Basketball

The Tigers hosted the StFX X-Women on Friday night and took a beating in the fourth quarter after only being down by one point going into the final frame. The Tigers were outscored 26-11 in the final ten minutes and couldn’t keep up with a deep StFX team. Tessa Stammberger had a fantastic game, dropping 19 points and adding 12 rebounds to get the double-double. Courtney Thompson added 16 points and six rebounds, while Robbi Daley went 2-3 from three and had 13 points.

The loss drops the Tigers to fifth in the AUS despite having the third best record. The Tigers take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday at SMU in a tough four-point game.

Men’s Basketball

Yet again, the Tigers go home empty-handed as they lost another last-second game. The Tigers lost 76-72 in overtime to the StFX X-Men in front of a stunned Dalplex crowd. Ritchie Kanza Mata connected on a layup with ten seconds left to tie the teams at 72, but it was the X-Men who came out on top in overtime as the Tigers drop to 2-8 on the season, reducing their chances at making the AUS playoffs.

Simon Marr came up big from beyond the arc late in the fourth quarter and had a game-high 24 points in the loss to go along with seven rebounds. Devon Stedman was active on the glass, grabbing 15 rebounds. Kanza Mata added 15 points of his own.

The Tigers head down the road to face the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday night at 8:00pm.

Women’s Hockey

The Tigers took on the St. Thomas Tommies on Friday night, looking to get their first win in 2014. The Tommies got out to a 2-0 lead in the first two periods, and Lisa MacLean scored early in the third period, but it wasn’t enough as the Tommies went on to win the game. Mati Barrett made 21 out of 23 saves in the loss.

They headed to Charlottetown on Saturday to do battle against the UPEI Panthers. The Tigers got down early in the first period as the Panthers got off to a 3-1 lead. Courtney Sheedy scored early in the third period to cut the deficit to one, but UPEI quickly answered to make it a 4-2 game. Elena Tsitouras scored with seven minutes left, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers lost 4-3.

The Tigers host Saint Mary’s on Tuesday at 7:00pm at Alumni Arena.

Men’s Hockey

It was another tough weekend for the men’s hockey team as they dropped both of their games, putting their 2013-2014 record at 2-17-1.

They were on the road Friday night to take on the Moncton Aigles Bleus. Moncton poured in three goals in the second period, and the Tigers couldn’t bridge the gap. Chris Ivanko notched a goal late in the third period, but the Aigles Bleus answered with two quick goals as they held on for the 5-1 victory.

They found themselves in a familiar position on Saturday, this time down 3-0 against the UNB Varsity Reds in the second period. Brad McConnell added a power play goal late in the second period, but the Varsity Reds added one more goal in the third period to seal the deal, going on to win 4-1. Bobby Nadeau had 38 saves in the loss.

The Tigers will write another chapter in the battle of Halifax on Wednesday when they host the Saint Mary’s on Wednesday night at 7:00pm at the Halifax Forum.

They turned things around on Saturday, winning a crucial five-set victory over the Montreal Carabins 3-2 (24-26, 20-25, 28-26, 25-20, 16-14). O’Brien led the charge again for the Tigers with 21 kills and 8 digs, while Alex Dempsey had 16 kills and 14 digs of his own.

The Tigers faced the Laval Rouge et Or in the final game of the interlock, and came out on top of a tough, back and forth game, winning 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-12).
