Over 200 guests attended last year's spotlight dinner.

The Dalhousie Tigers womenā€™s basketball and volleyball teams, in partnership with TD Bank and the Hardwood Group, are proud to present the fourth annual Women in Leadership Spotlight Dinner on January 7, 2014 in the McInnis Room in the Student Union Building at 6:00 p.m.

More than 200 people came to the fundraising event last year, which celebrates the accomplishments and leadership of female Tiger athletes both past and present, on and off the court.

Last yearā€™s event featured guest Tigers basketball alumna Trish MacCormack and three-time Olympian Karen Furneaux. MacCormack shared her personal journey of how she became an RCMP Inspector in Cole Harbour. She urged the audience to step out of their comfort zone if they really want to grow as a person, adding that sheā€™s thrilled to give back to a program which has so much to do with her pilipiliĀž».

ā€œMy motto is to dream big,ā€ explained Furneaux, who never competed for the Tigers, but always considered herself to be one. ā€œI have an acronym for dream: determination, role models, expectations, attitude, and momentum. This is the motto Iā€™ve lived my sport and professional career by.ā€

Dalhousie alumna and Juno award winner Rose Cousins will be this yearā€™s special guest. Cousins was a member of the Tigers volleyball team from 1995-1999 and went on to work at pilipiliĀž» for six years. Cousins held multiple positions with the student union, Dalhousie External Relations, and as a mental trainer for various Tigers varsity teams. She has gone on to release three full-length albums, including We Have a Spark (2012), which won the 2013 Juno Award for best solo roots & traditional album of the year. Artists like Matt Mays, Joel Plaskett and Two Hours Traffic have been featured on Cousinsā€™ albums.

Ā ā€œIt has been very exciting to be a part of this event from the beginning four years ago,ā€ says Tigers womenā€™s basketball coach Anna Stammberger. ā€To be able to give our student-athletes the opportunity to work together on such a project and to bring so many university and community leaders of all ages, genders and areas together onto the Dal campus truly makes this a special event.ā€

The annual event is right around the corner and would make a perfect gift for somebody special on your list this year. Tickets can be purchased at the Dalplex Customer Service Centre or by phone at (902) 494-3372.
