Men’s Hockey
The men’s hockey team travelled to Berwick, Nova Scotia this past Friday to play their last pre-season game against Acadia. The Tigers played hard but came up short against the Axemen, adding a fourth game to their losing streak that started at the previous weekend’s Northeastern University Invitational. The final score was 1-5 for Acadia. Â
The Tigers play UPEI in their first regular season game on October 18th at 7pm at the Halifax Forum.
Men’s Volleyball
The Tigers hosted the University of Winnipeg this past long weekend at the Dalplex. The Tigers started off the match by taking the first set (25-20) on Sunday evening. The match went back and forth, with Winnipeg taking the second set (25-27), Dal the third (25-16) and Winnipeg the fourth (25-22), forcing a fifth and final set to win the match. Winnipeg came out victorious, taking the last set (15-9). The Tigers team captain, Bryan Duquette led the way with 15 kills.
The Tigers had a rematch against the Wesmen on Monday afternoon. Winnipeg took the first set 25-22 but the Tigers came back in the second, winning 25-19. The Tigers played hard in an attempt to take the next set but it wasn’t enough. Winnipeg took the next two sets, winning each one by a slim margin of only two or three points giving them a 3-1 victory, sweeping the Tigers in the two-game series.
The Tigers play their next game October 25th against Laval as part of the AUS-RSEQ Interlock event.
Cross Country
Both the women’s and men’s cross country teams travelled to Montreal this past weekend to compete in the RSEQ Invitational. In the women’s 6km race, Julie-Anne Staelhi of Queen’s University was the first to finish with a time of 20:49. Tiger Ellen Chappell, one of last week’s G2 Athletes of the Week, was the first to finish for Dalhousie. Chappell finished in sixth spot with a time of 21:58, just over a minute behind first place. Rounding out the women’s top ten were Natalie Sachrajda (seventh) and Anna Von Maltzann (10th). The women came away with a second place team victory right behind Queen’s.
The men’s team had a tougher day, missing out on the top ten. Finishing first was Cha Philibert-Thiboutot of Laval with a time of 24:08. Matt McNeil, also one of last week’s G2 Athletes of the Week, finished 18th in 25:25. Finishing in the top fifty were Matthias Mueller (33rd), Bruce Russell (39th) and Adam McGregor (42nd). The men’s team took the fifth spot overall, right behind StFX.
Both teams will compete in the AUS championships on October 26th in Moncton, N.B.
