Women’s Soccer

The Tigers women’s soccer team (4-1-1) defeated Acadia (3-2-1) on Saturday, earning their fourth win in a row. They faced a tough Axewomen team and the score was tied through the 87th minute. Both keepers looked strong as Dal’s Shannon Junor and Acadia’s Caroline Wood made four and five saves respectively. Third-year striker Victoria Parkinson gave the Tigers the lead with three minutes to go and Dalhousie would hold onto it to win 1-0. Victoria Parkinson was named the Subway Player of the Game.

This win preserves the Tigers overall lead in the AUS with 13 points on the season.

The Tigers will look to extend their winning streak to five as they host the Saint Mary’s Huskies this Wednesday at Wickwire Field at 5:00.

Men’s Soccer

The Tigers (3-2-1) couldn’t hold onto their top spot in the AUS standings and fell to the Acadia Axemen (3-2-1) 2-0 on Saturday in Wolfville. The Tigers got off to a slow start in the first half but managed to keep the score tied at zero through to the half. They had a strong start in the second, but Erik Merchant placed a shot perfectly in the top corner past Tigers keeper Jason Ross to give the Axemen the lead in the 56th minute.

This goal shifted the momentum in the Axemen’s favor and the Tigers couldn’t seem to regroup after Matthew Berrigan scored for Acadia in the 65th minute. Nathan Rogers had an opportunity to put the Tigers on the board with a penalty kick, but Axemen keeper Eric McGarry came up with a huge save to preserve the two-goal lead.

The Tigers will look to rebound after the loss when they host the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday at Wickwire Field. They kick off at 7:15pm.

Men’s Volleyball

The Tigers hosted the York Lions in an exhibition match on Saturday night at the Dalplex. They got off to a strong start winning the first set 25-20. York would win the second set 25-18, but the Tigers rallied back to win the last two sets (25-21 and 25-23). Fourth-years Alex Dempsey and Bryan Duquette led the way for the Tigers with 15 kills apiece.

The Tigers will start their regular season in interlock play when they take on Laval on October 25th.

Men’s Hockey

The Tigers travelled down to Acadia to compete in the Don Wells Memorial Hockey Tournament this weekend. In their first game against the Saint Mary’s Huskies, Brad McConnell scored two goals and the Tigers went 2-6 on the powerplay to edge Saint Mary’s 5-3, which earned Dal a spot in the finals against the StFX X-Men.

The Tigers powerplay looked strong again capitalizing twice on seven attempts. StFX was up 3-2 when Tyler Hart scored with just over a minute left in the third period to tie things up going into overtime. Andrew Wigginton scored his third goal of the night when he put one past X-Men goalie Morgan Clark for the game-winning goal. Tigers goalie Bobby Nadeau made 57 saves in the victory.

The Tigers will head to Charlottetown to take on the UPEI Panthers in an exhibition match on Friday at 7:00pm.

Women’s Cross Country

The Tigers women’s cross country team continued to show their dominance with their second win in as many weekends at the StFX Invitational on Saturday in Antigonish. Ellen Chappell came third to lead the Tigers and Anna Von Maltzahn was 19 seconds behind her to capture fourth place. They finished with times of 22:44.31 and 23:04.52 respectively. The Tigers will look to make it three wins in a row when they compete in the DAL/SMU Invitational on October 5 in Halifax.

Men’s Cross Country

The men’s cross country earned their second consecutive second-place finish as StFX defended their home turf and won the StFX Invitational. Last year’s AUS silver medallist Matt McNeil showed that he is ready to lead the Tigers again this year earning a second-place finish with a time of 25:54.72, which was nine seconds off the lead.

Matthias Mueller and Oliver Hatheway also posted top-ten finishes for the Tigers as they finished in eighth and ninth place respectively.
