Tigers Weekend Recap (Feb. 15‑17)

Women’s Volleyball
Dal 3 @ StFX 0, SMU 0 @ Dal 3

Finishing first in the regular season, the Tigers earned a bye into the semifinal of the 2013 Subway AUS Championship. Lousie Facca recorded 15 kills in three straight sets versus StFX putting them in the finals the next day. Dalhousie claimed their first AUS banner in eight years defeating the AUS defending champion Saint Mary's Huskies 3-0 to and increased their winning streak to 16 straight matches. Maggie Li was selected as the tournament MVP, while Facca received Subway Player of the Game honours. Both Li and Facca were also named AUS first team All-Stars and Facca received the AUS Student-Athlete Community Service Award. Hilary Sears was named a second team all-star and head coach Rick Scott was named AUS Coach of the Year. The Tigers are off to Québec in two weeks for the 2013 CIS women's volleyball championship at the Université de Sherbrooke.

Men’s Volleyball
UNB 3 @ Dal 1, Dal 1 @ UNB 3

Dalhousie hosted UNB in the Subway AUS championship best-of-three series Friday night. The Tigers came out strong and claimed the first set, but UNB came back with a vengeance and won the second set. Even with Bryan Duquette hitting 17 kills, Dal was unable to comeback and lost the match 3-1. The black and gold travelled to Fredericton, N.B. to face UNB Sunday evening to try and tie the series up. Once again Dal was able to claim the first set with Alex Dempsey leading his team with 10 kills and Logan Baillie cleaning up eight digs. Unfortunately, the Varsity Reds claimed the second, third, and fourth sets for the victory. The AUS named Dal head coach Dan Ota the AUS Coach of the Year and Duquette, Dempsey, and Connor Maessen received AUS All-Star honours.

Track and Field
Tigers Track Classic

Saturday and Sunday the Tigers hosted their annual Track Classic at Dalplex. Dalhousie clearly dominated the meet with 31 top-three finishes, including 12 first place victories. The black and gold will be travelling to Moncton this weekend to compete in the AUS championships. Let’s go Tigers!

Women’s Basketball
StFX 83 @ Dal 73, Dal 78 @ SMU 83

Starting the week off early, the Tigers hosted StFX on Tuesday night. The X-Women came out strong and took control, leading by 12 points at the end of the second quarter. The black and gold fought hard to catch up, with Keisha Brown scoring 18 points in the second half, but the Tigers couldn’t keep the momentum going, losing 83-73. Currently fourth in AUS standings, Dalhousie was back in action Friday night against cross-town rivals Saint Mary’s. Battling back and forth, the league-leading Huskies maintained a lead of only a few points for most of the game. Despite a 20-point effort by Anna von Maltzahn Dal was unable to close the gap, losing 83-78.

Men’s Basketball
StFX 83 @ Dal 88, Dal 72 @ SMU 71

Dalhousie hosted StFX Tuesday night in their second-to-last home game of the season. With an early lead over the X-Men and stand out performances by third-year guard Jumol Mullings and fourth-year forward William Yenque, the Tigers sealed an 88-83 victory. The black and gold were back on the court Friday night, going point for point with Saint Mary’s. The Huskies had a lead by the end of the third quarter, but Dal stepped up and took control in the final quarter for a narrow 72-71 victory.
