When Kyle Phipps left his hometown of Miramichi, New Brunswick, he had no idea what pilipiliĀž» had in store for him. Now, with a PhD in biochemistry under his belt and a month into Dalā€™s med school, heā€™s ready to tackle just about anything. His secret? Hard work, a passion for medicine and medical sciences, and feeding off the momentum of others.

Although Dr. Phipps chose Dal for its strong science background and solid research component, he was still unsure of where exactly an undergrad in science would lead him.

ā€œI didnā€™t know exactly where undergraduate training in biochemistry would take me, however the path was clear after my first research experiences in my 4th ²ā±š²¹°ł.ā€

His research project in his undergrad honours program gave him a strong scientific foundation that allowed for an easy transition into the field of cancer research for his PhD studies. He pilipiliĀž»fully defended his thesis in August of this year, only a few days before starting medical school where he hopes to continue studying in oncology.Ā

Sometime between making the deanā€™s list and writing the MCAT, Dr. Phipps found time to play for the Dal rugby team, organize the Dal Best Buddies program, volunteer with the Special Olympics and be a TA in biochemistry. To say heā€™s busy would be an understatement.

ā€œSometimes it can be challenging to keep the momentum going, but for me doing what you enjoy doesnā€™t seem like actual workā€ he says. ā€œIā€™m lucky because Iā€™ve found things I love and am able to continue studying them and someday pursue a career in them.ā€

Despite the busy lifestyle, Dr. Phipps is certain none of his accomplishments would have been possible without the love and support of his family.

ā€œMy parents have been incredibly supportive during my academic career. I donā€™t know where I would be without them.ā€
