Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences / Faculty of Management

Congratulations to Peter Aucoin (Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Public Administration) upon receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law  from Saint Mary’s University on May 20 during their convocation ceremonies. Until his retirement in 2009, Dr. Aucoin was the Eric Dennis Memorial Professor of Government and Political Science and Professor of Public Administration. A leading scholar of public management and government for almost four decades, he has served in an advisory capacity at all levels of government in Canada.

Faculty of Computer Science

Congratulations to Katie Fraser (student, Computer Science) upon receiving the 2011 Google Canada Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was put in place to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders. As part of the scholarship, Ms. Fraser will be flown to Google in Mountain View for a networking session as well as receive a $5,000 scholarship towards the coming academic year.

Faculty of Health Professions

Congratulations to Marilyn Macdonald (Nursing) who was recently honored by the University of San Diego with the Author E. Hughes Award for Career Achievement.  “We’re very proud to honor Dr. Macdonald for her outstanding work in health care,” said USD President Mary E. Lyons.  “She exemplifies the work of thousands of USD alumni who are making a positive difference in their communities all around the world.”  The award is presented annually to an alumnus/a from each of the five schools of the university.

Faculty of Law

Congratulations to Vanessa LeBlanc (student, LLB/MPA) upon being selected from over 250 other candidates for the inaugural CFIB and Scotiabank Internship in Pubic Policy and Entrepreneurship. Over the next four-months, Vanessa will research and write a report assessing and comparing the burden of permits and licenses in Nova Scotia. This report will be a valuable lobbying tool on red tape and will help the Canadian Federation of Independent Business advance one of their members’ top priorities.

Congratulations to Graham Reynolds (Schulich School of Law) who has been selected as one of the 2011 scholars for the prestigious Trudeau Scholarships. His doctoral work will take him to the University of Oxford, where he will be weighing the impact of new copyright laws on the balance between the rights of copyright owners and freedom of expression. “Trudeau Scholarships not only accelerate the careers of the doctoral students who receive them, but also enable recipients to make a constructive contribution to Canada and Canadians,” said Foundation President P.G. Forest. “The Trudeau Foundation rewards excellence and provides young researchers with the best conditions to ground their work in the real world.”

Congratulations to Rollie Thompson (Schulich School of Law) and Shawna Hoyte (Legal Aid) both of whom were appointed as Queen’s Counsel earlier this year (along with 11 other alum from the Dalhousie Law School). The prestigious QC designation is awarded to members of the Bar who demonstrate professional integrity, good character, and outstanding contributions to the practice of law in serving the justice system, their communities, and all Nova Scotians.

Faculty of Science

Congratulations to Ronald O’Dor (Biology) one of four honorary degree recipients from Lakehead University. Dr. O’Dor received an honorary Doctor of Science. An exemplary role model for women in science, Dr. White has a strong commitment to increasing public awareness for and appreciation of science, and for the promotion of science to young people.”
