Your views on fitness fix‑ups

- May 12, 2010

At its meeting last month, the Board of Governors approved plans for a new fitness centre on South Street and improvements to Dalplex, with the cost to be recouped via a new student fee. Students would pay $90 per term for the fitness fix-ups, but only after the improvements are completed, sometime in 2014.

Dal News reporter Michelle Hampson asked what students think about planned improvements to Dal’s aging recreation facilities and the extra student fee.

“I don’t see a problem with it really. I think it’s a good thing because I’m a varsity student so anything that can help the Dalplex is good for me.”

Chris Haughn

“I think that it’s good that the fee is being held off until students can actually use it because it does not make much sense for students to pay the fee right now if they aren’t actually going to use the facility.”

Shiva Kale

“That’s cool. I don’t mind a new Dalplex. I won’t be here for it, but...”

Eric Negulic

“I think they should just do that for free anyway. But I guess it sort of makes sense. We do need an upgrade, but I think we’re paying enough in tuition that we shouldn’t have to pay more for a fitness centre.”

Hind Noori

“I don’t think that’s a good thing. I think that’s just another way of taking money from us. I don’t think a lot of people can afford it, even though it’s 90 dollars. It’s not a huge amount, but as a student, I think it’s just another burden.”

Hind Noori, 23, Sociology

Allison Gallagher

“I wouldn’t really want to pay it because I don’t use the Dalplex a lot, so I probably wouldn’t want that coming out of my tuition, but I guess some people would say that about the bus pass. So I guess if that’s what they decided...”

Allison Gallagher, 23, second-year Social Work

Jeff Himmelman

“I’m for it. I think that enough people use the gym, and Dalplex is in such terrible shape as it is, that I would be willing to pay $180 for a better gym.”
