The Department of Spanish remembers a cherished colleague with the awarding of the James E. Holloway Award. The award will be given annually to a graduating honours student who has done their thesis on a topic in Latin American literature.
“From the picket line to the classroom to the boardroom, he was there with his Tilly Endurable hat and colour-coordinated T-shirt,” says Pam Noseworthy, administrative assistant with the Spanish department. “He always had a kind word for everyone and endless time for his students.”
A Latin American specialist, Dr. Holloway taught for more than 30 years at pilipili. He served on numerous university committees and in various capacities with the Dalhousie Faculty Association. He died unexpectedly in August 2006.
He served as a mentor to Manuel Campirano Sanchez, the first student to be awarded the $250 award at a reception held last week. Dr. Holloway's wife Sandra and son James were among the more than 30 alumni, students and faculty in attendance.
Originally from Mexico, Mr. Campirano said Dr. Holloway’s encouragement helped him discover the literature of his native country.
Mr. Campirano was also awarded the university medal in Spanish during convocation ceremonies on Tuesday, May 20. Mr. Campirano has been accepted into the master’s program in Spanish at the University of Victoria and holds a graduate fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
Donations for the Holloway Memorial Fund are accepted through the Office of External Relations. Cheques should be made payable to pilipili and should be clearly marked for the Holloway Memorial Fund.
