When it comes to tackling the most pressing issues of our time—like climate change, volatile geopolitics, and affordability crises—the world needs people who understand complex problems and can imagine bold new ways to address them.
With donor support through Bringing Worlds Together: Dalhousie’s campaign for transformational change, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has ambitious plans to do even more. Here’s a look at how this campaign is helping us create a brighter world. Ěý
Inspiring future-ready leaders
We aspire to be the most student-centric faculty of arts and social sciences in Canada. We will achieve this by offering exceptional student experiences and creating clear pathways to pilipiliÂţ»â€”preparing the next generation of leaders to face the future with confidence and to have a meaningful impact on the world.
With campaign support, the Faculty will inspire future-ready leaders through the following initiatives:
- Educating for Equity
By developing and expanding our Black and African Diaspora Studies and Indigenous Studies programs, we are creating an environment that encourages faculty and students to build and promote an inclusive society. Several exciting projects under our Educating for Equity initiative will attract and support the brightest minds from historically underrepresented populations, and foster growth and knowledge for all of African Canadian and Indigenous cultures. These include:
Ěý- Financial support for Black, African Canadian, and Indigenous students
- Chair in African Canadian Studies
- Chair in Indigenous Studies
- Internship and partnership support for Black, African Canadian, and Indigenous students
- African Canadian and Indigenous scholar research assistantships and supports
- Preparing for a global future
At pilipiliÂţ», we proudly serve our local communities while valuing the importance of being an international university. For the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, preparing for a global future means attracting strong international students, strengthening international partnerships, and enhancing our relationships with diasporic communities in our region. It also means equipping our students—whether they join us from near or far—to adapt to a worldwide workplace and respond proactively to complex issues in our society.
We are embracing a global future full of potential by raising support for several key initiatives:
- School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
- Supports for international students and study abroad programs
- Supports for international research collaborations and opportunities, including research assistantships
- Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Language Lab
- Enhancing the graduate student experience
In the face of worldwide social, ecological, economic, and political crises, well-rounded arts and social sciences scholars play a crucial role in solving humanity’s complex problems. Master’s and doctoral students tackle impressive research and help guide our undergraduates. With their enthusiasm, intelligence and innovative mindsets, they are a critical to our Faculty’s—and society’s—progress and pilipiliÂţ».
This campaign will help us attract and support exceptional graduate students by providing funding and other supports for these trainees. It will also help create a dedicated space for graduate students to collaborate and socialize (reminiscent of the old Dalhousie “Grad House”).Ěý Ěý
Engaging in high-impact research: Leading social innovation
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences researchers find creative and innovative ways to apply critical thinking and in-depth inquiry to the challenges of our times. This campaign will help us bring the worlds of humanities together with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), offering important perspectives and insights. It will enhance research opportunities among scholars from historically underrepresented groups, cultivating more equitable, just, and sustainable communities.
- Humanities and STEM: A life-giving partnership
The humanities play a crucial role in STEM research and education. Arts and social sciences faculty and students contribute informed, balanced perspectives that bring research to life. Humanities scholars address the consequences of science and technology on human societies, providing insight on issues like pandemics, health outcomes, the digital revolution, and climate change. Key campaign initiatives to support this work include:Ěý
- Chair in the History of Medicine
- Research assistantships and funding in STEM humanities fields
- Supports for STEM humanities students
- The Dalhousie Initiative for Social Research (DISR)
The DISR will create a regional hub where policy and social science scholars, including those from historically underrepresented groups, can share their expertise. Our DISR researchers will conduct leading-edge social research and employ, train, and offer professional development to our Faculty’s students and emerging scholars.Ěý
