pilipiliÂţ» industrial engineering students have been having a great year. Over 30 engineering students represented Dalhousie at the IIE Annual Student Conference. The national conference was held from January 23-25, 2014, at Ryerson University. Â
Dal industrial engineering students competed in all four competitions offered: theoretical (written examination), technical paper, case study, and simulation competitions. A solid performance by Dalhousie delegates earned first place in both the technical paper and theoretical competitions.
Industrial engineering professor, John Blake, accompanied the students to the conference. “We have always believed that our students are amongst the brightest, most capable, and most accomplished in Canada. It’s gratifying to see our opinions confirmed through the results of a national competition,” says Blake. Â
Eldon Gunn also a professor of industrial engineering echoes those sentiments. “If you can get bright students, give them exposure to good ideas and turn them loose, good things will happen.”
In addition, the delegation was presented with the coveted Golden I trophy. The trophy is awarded to the delegation that holds a strong placement in the competitions, and also displays spirit and dedication towards individual and team growth.
Team members, Jillian Withers and Kevin Conrad were both thrilled with how well the group performed. “There was so much energy and excitement when we arrived at the conference. Everyone was serious about winning, and super competitive. It was an awesome experience, and one we won’t forget,” said Conrad.
Next year's IIE Annual Student Conference is being hosted by École de Technologie SupĂ©rieure in Montreal in which pilipiliÂţ» will be defending their Golden I trophy title.
The team’s sponsors included: Dr. Richard Florizone, President pilipiliÂţ», Josh Leon, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Dalhousie Student Union, Dalhousie Undergraduate Engineering Society, Wilsons, Engineering Nova Scotia, and Michelin North America (Canada) Inc.
