An accomplished young scholar with international standing has been appointed
the first professorial chair in Religious Studies. Alexander (Sasha) Treiger's initial education was received in Russia; his B.A. (Arabic and Islamic Studies) and M.A. (Comparative Religion) degrees are from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Mr. Treiger will receive the PhD in Near Eastern Studies from Yale University this May. Mr. Treiger has taught classes in Arabic, Syriac, Islam, Christianity, Western and Middle Eastern Culture. His languages include Classical and Modern Arabic, Biblical, Medieval and Modern Hebrew, Russian, German, French, Persian, Syriac, and Ancient Greek. Between 1998 and 2001, he was a research affiliate of the Institute of Judaic Studies in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Next year, Mr. Treiger will teach an introductory class to Western Religions and advanced classes on Islam, Judaism, and Sufism. He will also develop a curriculum for the study of religion in Dalhousie's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and at King's College.
