Dr. Song is a visiting professor and we are excited to offer him an opportunity to share his work.

Municipal solid waste landfills: a significant source of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)

Liyan Song is a professor of School of Resources and Environmental Engineering, Anhui University. He currently leads the Environmental Microbiology and Ecology Research group, which focus on microbiome, resistome and virome to further our understanding of microbial activity in landfills. He has been working on many national and regional scientific research projects and consequently has published over 100 peer-review scientific papers.

Blue Heritage and the UN Sustainability Goals: Constraints and Possibilities in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds.

Blue Heritage encompasses all forms of heritage that pertain to the seas and oceans, and which arise out of human engagement with the earth’s waters. Today, the fate of the world hangs in the balance because so much of the seas and oceans are facing uncertain futures. Uncertain futures, also, face the human communities who depend on the seas and oceans for their livelihoods.

The globalization of the world economy, meanwhile, has produced a global blue economy worth billions, whose economic use and exploitation of the seas and oceans has done so much to damage the blue world, and human blue heritage along with it.

This talk, by a co-editor of the recent Palgrave Handbook of Blue Heritage, will discuss what is at stake including ‘blue globalization’ of the coastal commons, community responses and adaptations to these stressors, promising policy shifts in the Global South and North, and the relationship of these processes to international development issues in general and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular goal #14 Life Below Water.

The SAGE Project: addressing the gap in First Nations’ access to knowledge and training in soil science and agriculture

First Nations in the Canadian prairies have a long-standing relationship to agriculture through historical treaties and contemporary agricultural production on their lands. In this region, roughly 1.5 million acres of First Nations reserve land is currently under annual crop production, yet it is estimated that more than 90% of this land is farmed by non-Indigenous farmers, administered through lease agreements. Due to the underrepresentation of Indigenous people from the production agricultural sector and the agricultural and environmental sciences, First Nations land managers who are tasked to manage lease agreements with producers are often at a deficit in knowledge of agricultural production generally, and beneficial management practices and soil stewardship more specifically. With expansion of agricultural land holdings via Specific Claims and Treaty Land Entitlement, there is urgent need for training and capacity building in agriculture for First Nations land managers, decision makers, and community members. The SAGE (Soil and Agroecosystem) Project was initiated to address this gap and is developing training materials targeted to a First Nations audience and delivering outreach activities within First Nations communities. Importantly, our outreach activities are integrated with cultural protocols and traditional knowledge, offering culturally relevant approaches to knowledge sharing for participants. This presentation will share the story of the development of the SAGE project, including research that grounds its motivation and approach for knowledge sharing in soil and agricultural land stewardship.
