CEI Research Internship
Job Summary
The Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) aims to research and conserve the impressive marine biodiversity that surrounds the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. We are seeking highly-motivated, early career scientists to intern with us. Successful candidates will be actively engaged with a vibrant community of visiting and resident researchers and students.
Our research generally focuses on turtle ecology, shark ecology, coral restoration, and sustainable fisheries. However, the research projects that we are running at CEI are continually changing as we answer old questions and move on to new ones. As such, the intern experience is highly dynamic and will be different every semester. More information on specific research projects that will be conducted during your internship will be provided during your interview.
Internship Responsibilities
- During a Research Internship at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, you will gain hands-on experience in:
- The collection, processing, and analysis of scientific data
- SCUBA diving
- ÌýWorking on research vessels
- Safe capture and handling of marine animals
- Husbandry of marine wildlife in our wet-lab facilities
- Teaching visiting students
Internship Requirements
- Completed or be in the process of completing a relevant undergraduate degree
- Working toward a career in marine ecology, environmental science, environmental education, or a related field
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and be adaptable to a flexible schedule
- Comfortable swimming and physically fit
- Prepared to work on boats in adverse weather conditions
- SCUBA diving certification highly recommended but not required
- 18+ and undergraduate students at pilipiliÂþ» with a minimum of 3rd year standing at the time of the internship placement
Schedule
During a typical work week, you will be expected to work Monday through Friday. Usually 2-3 of these days are spent in the field and the remaining time is spent maintaining equipment and processing data. Occasionally, you will be expected to work evenings or weekends. Whenever possible, you will be given time off during the week as compensation. There are also opportunities to help out with local outreach initiatives both during and outside of work hours.
