I had many tasks and duties around The Island School and The Cape Eleuthera Institute. My primary duty was to contribute to the scientific research that took place at the institute. I chose to help study the Stone Crabs of The Bahamas. We studied the sustainability of the claw only fishery, in conjunction with my supervisor Eric Schneider we came up with a Shuttle-box predation experiment to answer the following question: is there a change in predator avoidance by removing claws of the stone crab? My hypothesis was that they will display less risky behaviour with only one claw or without any, but we will see what the data says. So, within studying stone crabs, predator prey dynamics was the main focus of mine. I also helped teach the Stone Crab Research class at Island School two times a week. In this class we got our seven students involved in the real-life research that we were doing in the lab and in the field. This was a fun part of the job, and we got an extra hand on running our projects. The other main duty that I had as a Marine Research Intern at the Cape Eleuthera Institute was to participate in other research being undertaken here. This included helping with the coral research team on their scientific dives, in their wet lab, and in other tasks in the field. I also helped with maintaining the cleanliness of the wet lab tanks and our dry lab vaults. I was solely responsible for feeding the crabs and maintaining their health as well.

During my time at the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) I became a member of the Bahamas Coral Innovation Hub. Here I assisted researchers from CEI and The Perry Institute of Marine Science (PIMS) to maintain a coral nursery and in growing coral propagules ex situ in indoor and outdoor aquariums. At CEI, research is ongoing to determine how resilience to climate change can be enhanced and how DNA plays a role in this. While based at CEI, I also aided the team in monitoring the spread and destruction of Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease and educated students between the ages of 5 and 16 on the role of society in coral reef restoration.

My time spent with the Centre for Sustainable Development at CEI included dynamic opportunities that had each day being a whole new adventure. I was able to work on a plethora of ongoing research projects such as myco materials, permaculture, waste management, and where I spent most of my time, aquaponics. I improved my skills in science communication and project designing. I am grateful for the opportunity awarded to me through this scholarship and it provided me the ability to continue on to become a research technician then research assistant and lead teacher of a research class for high schoolers specializing in coastal restoration. I am now a self proclaimed botanist and certified scuba diver, strengthening and diversifying my tool set.
