How to read the timetable

Understanding the academic timetable

Sections:ÌýSome courses are broken up into smaller sections, offered at different times or in different rooms. Each course section will have a different CRN. Double check that you've got the one you want.
 Each line under a course title represents a section.

Blue or green lines: These linesÌýindicate labs or tutorials associated with a course. If a class has a tutorial or lab, you must register for that as well.

CRN:ÌýThe 5-digit number found in the column near the left of the timetable entry. This is the number you will use to register for each course online.

Special restrictions may be indicated to the left of the section as follows:

S Special authorization from the relevant department is required. Either authorization via the Web by the instructor, or a signature on the is required.
R Designates courses that are restricted to or from specific groups of students. If you do not qualify, you will not be able to register for the course.

Other additional information may also be printed beneath the section information.

Section

Lists the section number and type. Lecture sections are numbered 01 to 99. Laboratory sections are numbered B01 to B99 and tutorials are numbered T01 to T99.

Tuition

Lists the Tuition Code and Billing Hours for the course. This is used by to calculate tuition fees for each course.

Days

Days of the week the course is held. M=Monday, T=Tuesday, W=Wednesday, R=Thursday, F=Friday, S=Saturday, U=Sunday.

Location

Indicates the campus, building and room number where the course is held, if available. Please note: locations are TENTATIVE and are subject to change. You should check your course schedule regularly for any changes before courses begin. Campus maps are available at the top of the timetable if you need help finding your classroom.

Instructor

The name(s) of the course instructor(s), if available. To seek information/overrides for courses listed with "Staff", contact the department.

Course Numbers

0100–0299 level courses are Faculty of Agriculture Technology Program courses
1000 level coures are introductory
2000–4000 level courses are advanced level
5000 level courses and above are Graduate level

C/D

Consult department for information. You will need to contact the administrative office of the department the course is connected to.

CRN

The Course Reference Number is a unique course section identifier which is the key item of information required to register for a section. All Fall CRN's start with a 1. Winter CRN's start with a 2. Summer CRN's start with a 3. Medicine and Dentistry CRN's start with a 4.

Cr Hrs

Credit Hours for the course. In most programs, one full credit is the same as a course designated as 6 credit hours, or a course labeled X/Y (e.g., ENGL 1000 X/Y.06). Half a credit is designated as 3 credit hours (e.g., BIOL 1010.03).

Link

If a link connector is indicated, a course also has a lab and/or tutorial. You are required to register for the lab and/or tutorial linked with the lecture. For example, if one or more tutorial sections have an "L1" link connector, you must register for one of those tutorial sections if you register for lecture section 01.

Times

The 24 hour format is used to indicate the time of day each course is held.

Enrolment Info

  • Max: Indicates the maximum number of seats available in the course. Courses with unlimited enrolment are listed as "OPEN". For some courses, groups of seats may be reserved for students in particular programs. For example, "UG ENGL (20)" would indicate that 20 seats are reserved for English majors.
  • Current: The current number of students enrolled in the section.
  • Avail: The current number of available seats in the section.
  • WaitList: Indicates the current number of students on a wait list to register for the section, if the section has a wait list available.
  • %Full: Indicates the current status of the course enrolment—the current percentage of total seating occupied, or FULL, WLIST (waitlist), WL FULL (waitlist full). Its colour will also change depending on how full the section is; green, yellow, red or dark red.

X/Y Courses

These are full-year courses. You must take both the X and Y parts in consecutive terms (September–December and January–April) to receive credit for the course. If you register for either half, you will be automatically registered in the other half.

R

Restricted courses:  In the example below, note the blue R, which indicates a restricted course. In the actual timetable, you'd be able to click on the R to see who the course is restricted to.

S

An S indicates that online permission is required from the professor before registering. (The "S" used to stand for "signature".) To obtain online permission, contact the instructor and ask to take the course. If permission is granted, you'll see the course listed on your registration status page.

Course Information

Read the course description by clicking the triangle icon to the right of the course title.Ìý This also includes important prerequisite (required course registration needed to be able to register), cross-list (aka equivalent), and exclusion (i.e. credit will only be given for one of the courses) information, if applicable.

Further to the right, you will also find the term, part-of-term (if applicable) in brackets, and date range of the course. The part-of-term dictates the course's add and drop deadlines.Ìý If no part-of-term number or letter is listed (in brackets), the course is considered "Open Learning"; see for the extra step you will encounter to register for these.
